Shoe Care

Protect your investment in your “first love” by taking great care of your shoes! Clean your prized possessions on a regular basis. Leather can be polished and conditioned with a leather lotion applied with a soft cloth. Suede should be brushed; I use a clean toothbrush.

Waterproof and protect your shoes from water, mud, snow and stains. Before wearing a new pair of peds, spray with a waterproofing protectant. Re-spray on a regular basis thereafter.

Another great product for this—one that offers more protection than the spray-on kind—is Doc Marten’s Wonder Balsam. It works well to add shine, remove light scratch marks, and condition the leather.

A bit of polish can make your favorite, well-loved shoes look like new again. Polishes remove scuffs, renew color and protect and smooth leather. Here’s a kit that includes everything you need: Black polish, dark brown polish, tan polish, burgundy polish and two medium brushes…

If you plan to wear your shoes frequently, find a good shoe repair shop that you can turn to when your shoes need some TLC. Adding shoe taps and/or rubber soles is a good way to delay the gradual wearing-out process. For just $25 you can extend the life of a $200 pair of shoes. Now that’s a smart investment!

For shoes made of soft nappa leather, try wooden shoe keepers. Once inserted into the shoe, shoe keepers help retain the shape and mold of the shoe. Full cedar shoe trees absorb damaging moisture from the linings of shoes and can increase the life of your shoes by 4 or 5 years. I have a number of Woodlore shoe keepers in my closet—and I love them!
